Finally got some good pics of these :D

Top one is a lion claw with scrimshaw and black ink to bring out the pattern.

Bottom is a polar bear claw with scrimshaw, didn't need any ink for this one but might end up adding a bit more white into it :D

I'm definitely going to be doing a lot more of these, and already ordered some more claws and teeth to work on, plus working on a lion tooth at the moment.

Both claws are museum quality replica's.

Beautiful work!! I've always wondered how this is done.

:P Very carefully! I use a scalpel blade to carve in the design, then just carefully rub indian ink into it. The main problem with working with resin is you have to be very very careful and get the excess off before it dries, there are only so many times you can rub a spot with acetone to get the ink off before the colour and resin come off the claw as well D:

Thanks for the info. I'd really love to try it, but my polar bear and lion claws cost a fortune, so I may attempt it on something less valuable first. Yours are absolutely gorgeous! :)

Thats also partly why I'm using replica claws, ignoring the cost and hassle of importing them, I'd feel terrible if I messed up something that amazing haha. I highly highly recommend this tutorial [link] which is far more helpful with real materials, though, I do recommend playing around with resin stuff too :D It's pretty fun and no where near as expensive, plus you have a large surface to work on. I got my claws from Skulls Unlimited for around $15 each (excluding postage) but the quality of them makes it worthwhile :D

These are lovely! May I ask how scrimshaw is even performed? Is it with just a sharp pointed object, or a fine tool on a dremel etc?

:D Thank you! I used a scalpel blade to carve in the designs for these. The resin is soft enough that it carves easily, though you can also use sharp tools like scalpels for real claws as well :D
